Kerrie Hershey, Lakeport
Charter member of the Ladies of the Lake Quilt guild and long time member of Konocti Quilters guild in Lakeport. My love of fabric and sewing began around age 9. My mother taught me how to use our old straight stitch Singer in a cabinet and I have been sewing ever since. I made most of my school clothes and saved my babysitting money to buy fabric. I grew up in Lakeport and we had two fabric stores at that time and I spent lots of time in them. No one else in my family sewed so I taught myself. I had a lady in town make my buttonholes because I was using our straight stitch machine. When I was 14 1 bought my own zig zag machines. |
I sewed everything, bridal gowns, prom dresses, CLHS band jackets, curtains, did alterations and just about anything else. Alterations were not my favorite.
My love of quilts started when my mother-in-law gave me an Ohio Rose quilt made by her mother. The hand quilting was wonderful. In 1979 1 took a class at the Ukiah Adult Ed and one at Connie's Customs in Redwood Valley and have been quilting by hand and machine ever since.
I started teaching quilting to our church ladies and in 1991 with the encouragement of several friends, I became a Quilt-In-A-Day certified instructor and started teaching classes in our home. A year later we added a sewing machine dealership. In 1994 we started hosting quilt retreats. In 1996 1 received the Martha Pullen Heirloom Sewing Certificate. My dream of someday owning a fabric shop came true in 2001 when we opened Kerrie's Quilting in Nylander's Village shopping center. The shopping center later renamed High Street Village.
I have been blessed with many awards in the quilt world. Best of Show, Best Machine Workmanship, People's
Choice Award and in 2008 the Stars of Lake County Small Business Award. I have judged 4-H Fashion Review, CLHS Senior Projects, Voc-Ed Fairs, county fairs, and quilt shows. Taught hundreds of classes, made hundreds of quilts and collected hundreds of yards of gorgeous fabrics. I enjoy teaching and selling all things quilting and sewing for nearly 30 years with my husband who has supported and endured all the craziness. The quilt shop was also a place of God's blessings, prayer and joy to many. Even though we closed our shop and are doing retirement things, I continue to travel and teach and share my love of quilting.
Thank You to the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild for choosing me to honor their 2024 Quilt Show as Featured Artist.
