As always our members shared beautiful projects they have completed and a few in the works. We had a wonderful guest speaker, Sharon Templeton the "Chaotic Quilter". Everybody enjoyed her quilts and humor. Below is a slide show of her presentation. Immediately following the Valley fire, I received emails from friends, fellow quilters and total strangers concerned about assisting those who had lost their homes. Quilters near and far wanted to offer comfort and warmth that only a hand made quilt could provide. The furthest was a generous quilter from Rochester, New York, who had heard about the fire through the internet on Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson's website "The Quilt Show". She had 20 quilts to share! Another was Helen Sexton of Green Valley, CA. She and several friends were getting together for their yearly Berryessa quilting retreat when the fire broke out and decided to work on quilts for the fire victims instead of personal projects. Helen is a longarm quilter and said she had 30 quilts to quilt from this group and would deliver them just as soon as she could. After a few days, she decided not to wait till all were quilted and would send me what was completed so far; they're pictured below. I found out that 14 firefighters had lost their homes and everything they own while trying to save homes of others in our community. I decided they should receive Helen's first group of quilts. The pictures below show the beautiful hand tied and machine quilted quilts from baby to bed size from Helen. The last picture shows me and Middletown Fire Department Secretary Mandy accepting the quilts on behalf of the Department. Mandy was thrilled and stated they will be well loved and needed. Helen is also a member of the Napa Valley Quilters Guild and had started receiving quilts from them and fabric from distributors as well. She decided it would be great if both guilds could work together and decided to invite members of our Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild to join Napa Valley Quilters in sew day. I was so sad I wasn't able to attend but happy to see a few quilters from our guild were able. A great day for all. Here is what our President Carolyn Dexter shared with me about the sew day...
"The Napa Valley Quilt Guild invited our guild to join them at a sew day where we made quilt tops and received finished quilts for the victims of the Valley Fire. From our guild Jan Cook, Mary Ann Riley, Carolyn Dexter, Geri Beam, Debbie Vivrette and Carolyn's sister Marilyn Grock attended. We had a great time and got lots of quilting done. Some finished quilts went home with Geri and Marilyn for fire victims they know. Other finished quilts will be available at our guild meeting on November 14." Below are pictures that Carolyn and Jan Cook sent to share of this special day... Connie Cracraft Web Editor The Falling Leaves Quilt Show will go on as planned! The Valley fire is 90%+ contained, the air is clear and roads to Lakeport are open. It will be held at the same place and times as originally announced:
Lake County Fairgrounds, Lakeport Saturday, 10/3, 10am-5pm Sunday, 10/4, 10am-4pm. It will hopefully bring a little ray of sunshine to those who have experienced so much over the last two weeks since the Valley fire started. Saturday, September 12, 2015, will be a day many in our quilt guild and local community will surely remember for years to come. An uncontrollable fire exploded with waves of flames destroying everything in its path. The communities of Hidden Valley Lake, Cobb Mountain, and Middletown received the greatest damage. Everyone in our small county has been touched in some way. The number of homes lost is almost beyond comprehension. Although those that lost their lives were few, they are a tremendous lose to their loved ones.
Four members of our guild family lost their homes. In addition two of those members had family who lived close by who also lost homes. Although they lost everything, Kathy Pratt, April Lynch, Glenda McConlogue (plus her daughter and son-in-law), and Donna Hodges (plus her daughter) are safe and staying with relatives or friends in temporary housing. My wish is that they know they are not alone; they have been and will continue to be in the thoughts and caring hands of family, friends and total strangers. The quilting community is amazing. Quilters and quilt guilds near and far (even out of state) are coming forth offering quilts to our members as well as our local community. They are all made with love and will provide comfort and support during this difficult time. I can't express the depth of heartfelt feelings I've experienced seeing the deep affection and concern shared by friends, family and stranger towards those experiencing such devastation and sadness. Humanity at it's best. Connie Cracraft Website Editor September's meeting was wonderful. Members Jane Alameda, Marj Sweeney, and Martha De Leon presented a trunk show sharing many of the quilts they have made and own. We have many great pictures of the trunk show, show and tell, doll quilts and block of the month to share on the blog this month. Grab a cuppa, sit for a spell and enjoy...
